What is the true definition of the word "normal"?
To me, there isn't a definition for this due to the fact that what is "normal" for one person, it is not for another. Psychologically, yes, there is a "normal", but personally, theoretical, to me, there isn't.
The way I see it, normal is whatever is generally seen as acceptable to society, whatever society you're in. The problem is that some people treat being normal as some ultimate way of being, as if being a harmless eccentric is some kind of horrible thing. Many times, at least to me, normal can seem as if it means being mediocre, uncreative, bland, conservative, conformist, dull, etc.
In the view of society hmmm physically mentally and emotionally perfect.Rich, successful and beautiful with beautiful children a mills and boon husband and an easy non stressful life...personally I find the word to be insulting and impossible to live up to.
Normal is a setting on a washing machine. That's about it.
Well, if it was up to me myself, the word "normal" would be abolish from the English language, due to it not having a clear-cut definition. To me, it's just a word that is only defined, to a very small degree, in psychology, and even that definition isn't too clear.
I might agree to a point. I dunno, I guess it's a way for some people to distinguish themselves in comparison to the unknown creepies of the world that they hear about on the evening news. Again, it's a societal thing, as in going to work and drinking coffee and getting married is normal. Hacking up cheerleaders with an axe and storing them in pickle jars is not normal. That kind of thing. LOL!
That could very well be true, but only from a psychological point of view does this word, "normal", even become slightly defined, and that's even vague.

I dunno. Not into psychology as such so couldn't tell ya.
Aragorn I agree and even more so having read a very interesting book on Manic Depression where the author an eminent psychiatrist referred to those without the illness, as normals, this clear cut defining of people in psychology has always bothered me as I think it is almost impossible to be so consistant and accurate...
And yet, they always must insist on using that term. I've never been able to understand why.
The word normal reminds me of the Amish and well you and I are not normal people do not exsist but I guess even the Amish are getting a little high tech now.
Ah, but the word "normal", like the word "love", has no true meaning though. If I'm "normal" to someone, I may not be "normal" to someone else. Take the word "love", way too many definitions and so forth.
